Captain
Last week we had the pleasure of announcing our new Captain for the season to come. Ian Smith has taken over from Graham Keys, who is having a well-earned 6 week break in South Africa. We would like to thank Graham for his year in the role. Graham was a gracious Captain, and a good playing partner, till his handicap came down. We hope to see more of the same from Ian this year.
We would like to wish Ian the best of luck as I look forward to playing with him over the coming months.
Here is Ian is doing his first duty as Captain at the weekend, presenting Richard and Linda Worsley with the prize for Sunday's mixed competition.
Masters Sweepstake
The Masters countdown has begun and with it time to start talking about our masters sweep-stake. We are going to run it as normal:
Sweepstake- £10 Per Player
1st Prize -£175 Pro Shop Voucher
2nd Prize - £125 Pro Shop Voucher
3rd Prize - £75 Pro Shop Voucher
4th Prize - £50 Pro Shop Voucher
5th Prize - £25 Pro Shop Voucher
£10 Pro shop voucher for lowest round on each day when your golfer finishes outside of the top 5 position.
Only the top 50 players in the world rankings will be used.
Alongside this we are thinking about running a chance for you to get your money back on items purchased in shop. What we are thinking of doing is when you buy a piece of new hardware we will assign you with a player who uses that brand. For example, if you were to buy a Callaway wedge, the obvious player you would be assigned to is Phil Mickelson.
On Saturday 20th February we had an AMAM Shotgun. Rain caused the course to be waterlogged and as a consequence we only had 9 holes open for this comp. Ian Johnson, Garry Tictchen and Ken Jee came in with 37 points which put them in 3rd place. Just ahead with 38 points in 2nd place were Charlie Cunningham, Alan Perry and Nick Wood. But a further shot ahead were George Senior, Mike Forbes and Colin Fearns who managed 39 points to win Saturday's competition.
The following Sunday we had a mixed competition. Gareth and Jill Morris came in with 27 points which was good enough for 3rd place. Doug Piggot and Jean Duncan also scored 27 points but came 2nd on a card play-off. But just one shot ahead with 28 points and the winners of the comp were Richard and Linda Worsley. Well done to all our winners in last week's competitions.
Warm Up
On the Pro's Evening we talked about warming up and the mistakes most people make. Most of you will go to the range and hit a bunch of drives and only do a few putts. Most pros will start on the putting green then head to the range. The reason for this is that by starting with your putting you are using your shortest club, shortest swing and generating a rhythm. Followed by chipping and pitching.
If we look how Rory McIlroy warms up before playing in a tournament and here are the numbers.
Now the interesting stat here is that more than 50% of the strokes he plays are less than 100 yards.
Most of you will just hit a few full swings in the net and head out, when in fact you should be focusing more on your touch.
If we look at Bubba Watson, he pretty focusses entirely on putting. He starts of at the putting green and does around 50 puts using different aids, such as alignment sticks and string before he even heads to the practice ground.
He then hits a dozen wedge shots without a glove, just enough to get his eye in. Then he hits another dozen wedge shots with his glove on.
Then he gradually moves up the bag, getting longer. He only hits 2 or 3 fairway woods before hitting 6 or 7 drives. He then heads back to the putting green where he hits around 30 lags puts before heading to the first tee with 5 minutes to spare. This is exactly how you should warm up.
If you want to discuss how you warm up, get in touch with us in the shop. Next week, we will focus on how to drills to help you improve your game.
New Kit
Launching into 2016
With the new season approaching it's time to get geared up. We've got the brand new range from PING, the G30, and Callaway's new range, the XR16 coming to our shelves. Book your fitting here!
PING G30
Driver
Crown turbulators in the 460cc head help generate greater club head speed and ball velocity for consistently longer drives that find the fairway. The new T9S face material is strong, lightweight and thin, optimizing face deflection for even higher ball speeds and longer drives. With Trajectory Tuning+ Technology, you can fine-tune launch conditions using five settings and 2 full degrees of loft adjustability.
Fairway
Designing a hotter, more forgiving face for generating distance with control was the inspiration behind the G30 fairway woods. A strong, uniform-thickness Carpenter 475 face maximizes deflection to increase ball speed and generate distance. The face is also taller for additional face bending and forgiveness. Crown turbulators help with aim and confidence. And with five settings, you can add or subtract up to 1 degree of loft to optimize trajectories.
Hybrid
Faster ball speeds and longer distance with a higher max shot height will give you the stopping power to hold shots on the greens and attack pins. The 17-4 stainless steel face is H900 heat-treated so it's thin but strong to increase ball velocity. Internal weighting creates a high MOI. Progressive CG locations and offsets ensure efficient gapping and trajectories that maximize distance.
Callaway XR16
Driver
The XR 16 Driver is where forgiveness meets fast. We worked with Boeing on our most aerodynamic head shape and a redesigned Speed Step, put in more MOI and added more speed with our next generation RoMOTO face.
Fairway
The XR 16 Fairway Wood is bigger, hotter, and more forgiving with a new Face Cup that leads to even more speed and distance.
