US Open Final Round Nightmare
One of the great major championship performances was ludicrously overshadowed, a competition that had been really good up to that point, by a rules controversy that ultimately reduced the margin of Dustin Johnson's US Open victory from four shots to three. The farce that played out on a warm Pennsylvania afternoon should serve as a prompt to rip up existing protocols and ensure future championships are never again faced with a similar situation. While we should be marvelling at the new champion's brilliant approach to the home green at Oakmont, we are instead picking apart the events that followed an incident on the fifth green. This is where Johnson was adjudged to have caused his ball to move prior to holing out for a par.
For me it was clear he did not touch the ball and had not ground his club before the ball moved and therefore the shot should have been played from its new position, with no penalty. It is not very often you get the high profile names such as Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth come out and publicly slate major tournament officials, but they took to twitter with a lot of other high profile names to express their anger with the way the situation was handled. By the way, we are still waiting to see replays of that wonderful Johnson approach to 18 which should have been the abiding Oakmont memory.
Last week on Tuesday 14th June the ladies played in a 36-hole competition. In the first round Isobel Wardle came in 1st with a 68 nett, Jae Bowers came in 2nd with a 73 nett and Cecilia Lyon came 3rd with a 75 nett. Unfortunately none of these 3 played the 2nd round of golf which opened up the field for the rest to win. Nicky Markland came in 3rd with a total of 163, a further 4 shots ahead with a score of 159 was Lynne Cameron, but out in 1st place with a good score of 157 was our Lady President.
The following Saturday we had the gents playing in the White Memorial Trophy in the form of a Bogey/Par Competition. We had some very good scores come in on Saturday. Nick Baglin managed a score of 3 which was only good enough for 3rd place. Bill Seddon scored the same but beat Nick on a card play-off to come in 2nd place. But out in front with a great score of 4 was Alex Howarth.
Sunday 19th came the turn of the mixed, they played in a Mixed Greensome, in which we had a pretty good turnout. Brian and Wendy Mosely came in 3rd place with a decent score of 35 points. In 2nd place we had Doug McNair and Laura McNair who scored an impressive 37 points.
However this was not enough to win as Jayne Harrison and Peter Harrison managed the same score but won on a car play off, here they are pictured with the lady captain after taking the winnings.
Dates for your Diary
On Friday 22nd July I will be receiving all the best putters from Odyssey and wedges from Callaway to have a go with for a week. Now, during that week I want to run different events every day, all to do with the short game. So one day we will do gapping, another day we will do lofty shots and another putting and so on. All will be free to take part in and will include prizes for any winners of the events, so it's something to look forward to.
Another day we've got booked for you in the Cobra experience. We've got the Cobra rep coming down with all the latest drivers and irons you should all have a go with. Come into the pro-shop to book a slot!
Finally… Thank You
I would like to finish off by thanking you all for your kind words of congratulations to me on my new granddaughter.
