Ryder Cup Team Selected
The big news this week is obviously that Darren Clarke has selected Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Thomas Pieters as his three wild cards for Europe's defence of the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine. Clarke had made no secret of the fact he wanted to balance the team with experienced players for the tournament that starts in Minnesota on 30 September, with Westwood and Kaymer being the obvious picks.
Russel Knox can feel a little hard done by as he would have qualified if he had been a European Tour member when he won the WGC-HSBC Champions last November and boosted his case by adding the Travelers Championship earlier this month.
Though Pieters has been in great form recently, and although just below Knox on points, his recent form has given him the final spot. The Belgian finished fourth in the Olympics and second in the defence of his Czech Masters title the following week, before winning in Denmark on Sunday. The 24-year-old had shot opening rounds of 62 and 71, while playing alongside Clarke, so his place in the team is certainly justified.
Last Wednesday we had one of our Mid-Week Stableford competitions.
We were pleased to see Brian Leatherbarrow (pictured) win the comp with his new set of bats that he purchased from us. Well done Brian!
On Saturday the gents played in the Captain's Bell, our first competitions using the online sign in. We had some good scores in with the top 3 all scoring 69 nett. Stephen Hall came in third, Sean Hamill in 2nd and none other than our Captain in first place, beating the other two on a card play-off. Well done Captain!
Then on Sunday we had a mixed stableford competition. Mike Forbes, Nick Markland, Lady Captain and Peter Harrison came in third with a decent score of 84 points. A few shots ahead of them with a very good 89 points were Mark and Gill Mellor playing with Simon and Debbie Baker. But out in front with a fantastic score of 90 points were Graham and Vicky Keys playing with Doug and Laura McNAir.
Tuesday was the ladies turn, they played in the Ferguson Bowl Finals which was a Par/Bogey competition. Just like the men's competition on Saturday it was very close at the top. The top 3 players all scored -1. Patricia Hunt came in 3rd, Gill Mellor came in 2nd and Debby Baker to the 1st prize by beating the other two on a card play-off.
We also want to say congratulations to Matt Sorigan and Garry Titchen (pictured) who have reached the Finals Weekend of the Daily Mail Foursomes.
We wish them the best of luck in finals!
New Daily Sports
Flying off the shelves!! We have just recently got in the newest daily sports range for autumn 2016. We've got polo shirts, wind proofs, shorts, trousers, pullovers, gloves, hats.. Well just about everything you need to be wearing the latest in golf fashion.
We get the daily sports range in every season and it always seems to be the most popular, so make sure you get don't quick before we sell out of the new shirt in the size you want!
One of the best garments we've got in is the new trousers. Soft to the touch, water-repellent and wind safe too, without being heavy to wear. The fleece backed fabric is extremely breathable so your legs stay nice and toasty, without overheating. Theses trousers are perfect for autumn golf in Prestbury.
Finally, the captain and I played recently played in a Captain/Pro event at Dunham Forest.
It was a great day out, the course was in great shape but unfortunately we didn't win the trip to Portugal that was on offer.
We came amongst the pack, but had a great day anyway.
