The Ryder Cup

Obviously you all know the result of the Ryder Cup and before we start criticising the European team we want to say what a fantastic event it was. The course looked great and the crowds were in great voice, apart from a few over excited drunks, which is to be expected when the bars are open from 7am. We actually thought the crowd's nonsense added to the spectacle, it was a great event for golf.

The standard of some of the golf was unreal. In particular the Mickleson and Garcia match was incredible. They shot 19 birdies between them and finished the match with a half. Arguably the most entertaining though was the McIlroy vs Reed match, the most pumped up player on both teams facing off against each was a lot of fun. But unfortunately the Americans ended up winning the match pretty comfortably down to our weak performances from the 2nd half of the team. A few of the Europeans on the 2nd half had particularly poor weekends. Lee Westwood probably shouldn't have been in the team, it was clear to see he was way off the pace of the tournament and some of his putting was laughable. Unless something miraculous happens over the next couple of years this will be his last Ryder Cup. The same could have been said about Martin Kaymer, his week never really got going and I think as he carried on playing badly the pressure built on him and he just couldn't perform to his normal standard. It was Danny Willets first Ryder cup after a season which started with him winning the masters, but after that great high he never really kicked on and it was no surprise to see him have poor Ryder Cup. He didn't score a single point and was humiliated in the final day singles. We also had young Matt Fitzpatrick who was way out of his depth, he has had a good year and made the team on the points he earned on the European Tour, but the situation was too big for him and he couldn't perform his best golf.

However there were some shining lights, the young Belgian Thomas Pieters had an incredible Ryder Cup, winning all 3 of his matches with Rory and his singles match. He never looked fazed by the situation at all but maybe it's just a poker face, but what a career he has ahead of him. Also one of our favourites Sergio Garcia was in fine form, he's hitting the ball great and actually looks like he might have his nervy putting under control, I wouldn't bet on him not winning a major in his career just yet.

Arnie's Memorial

The golf world gathered to say 'goodbye' to The King on Tuesday. Mourners packed into Saint Vincent College Basilica in Latrobe, Pa, on Tuesday morning to pay their respects to golf legend and American icon Arnold Palmer, who died on Sept. 25 at age 87. Ryder Cup victors Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson brought along the Cup to the funeral, and were in tears as they took their special guest to the ceremony. His private funeral for family members was last Thursday this gave a chance for the people to pay their respects to the great man.

Competition news

On Saturday the gents played in an AMAM Betterball Stableford in which we had 11 teams, we had the quarter finals of a couple of the knock out competitions that morning so some people were playing in that. Even though some of knockout finalist weren't playing we still managed some good scores. Steven Savage, Paul Wild and Alan Farrer came in 3rd with 78 points. Iain Bartholomew, Michael Davis and Ian Johnson came in 2nd with a very good score of 82 points. But out in front with a great score of 84 points were Scott Straughan, Ian Rennison and Bill Seddon. Well done guys.

The following day was the final of Top Dog 2016 and the Worthington Memorial. In the Top Dog Matthew Sorrigan beat Steve Hall in the final to become the Top Dog of Prestbury for a year. The Worthington Memorial saw James Newton take on Matt Delaney which James won and added yet another trophy to his cabinet. Well done to our winners and to anybody who reached finals day.

On Tuesday the ladies played in a Stableford comp. Jae Bowers won division 1 with 35 points just beating Jean Duncan on a card play-off. Carole Riley won division 2 and the overall competition with a great score of 36 points, fending off Elaine Fawkes who was just a shot behind her.

Well done to all our winners over the last week!!

Any member that is interested feel free to enquire, the more members we get on board to take part the better.

We are also doing a ball fitting week. If you would like to know which ball we sell in the shop is best suited to your swing, come and have a go with our launch monitor in the nets. It will test the spin and launch you get on the ball to determine which ball is best for your game.
