Greetings from Nick Summerfield
Prestbury Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Last week saw the PGA Championship take place at Wentworth. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy snatched a remarkable victory. McIlroy came from seven shots behind to surge to the top of the leader board on Sunday as overnight leader Thomas Bjorn squandered a five-shot lead. I don't think any of us expected Rory to have such a good week with his recent personal problems. He carded a closing 66 to win the European Tour's main event for the first time, following a rollercoaster final day. McIlroy only took the outright lead for the first time with a birdie on the 71st hole and made another on the last to finish 14 under par, one ahead of Ireland's Shane Lowry with two-time winner Luke Donald and Bjorn a shot behind in third.

On Saturday 24th we had the Founders Vase in which 135 players took to the course. The winner by 3 strokes with a very impressive nett 65 was Mike Smith. Joe Armitt took 2nd place with a nett 68 whilst Conrad O'neil and Steve Best filled with prizes coming joint 3rd, just one shot behind.

Joe Armitt is worthy of another mention as he made the lowest gross, 68, taking his handicap back to +1. The course standard scratch rose from 71 to 74 due to the awful weather we experienced at the weekend, so some of you may have an unexpected change to your handicap.

Moving on, there will be no Gents competition on this Saturday as we are hosting a county match with the Cheshire ladies taking on Cumbria's ladies.

Last Tuesday the 20th we had the Ladies Invitation day where 42 pairs played in the 4BBB. Jane Campaigne and Celia Stanley took 1st with a great score of 48 points. In 2nd place with 45 points was our Lady Captain playing with Rosemary Mason with a very respectable 45 points. And completing the prizes last week with 44 points in 3rd place was Jill Morris and Penny Clarke. Congratulations to all our winners last week.

This week in the shop the main focus is on putters. It is important to understand what happens when a ball is putted. This helps in the putter fitting process and ultimately to help golfers putt better.

First of all every putt skids before it begins pure roll regardless of what advertising says as the video shows.

When you analyse what happens to a ball after it is putted, you would come to the conclusion that a minimum percentage of skid and maximum percentage of roll would be the best situation to control direction and especially distance. This is only true if the ball is putted correctly, so therefore you need the correct putter for you. The main focus this week is on Odyssey putters.

Odyssey is considered one of the leading putter companies in the world and was among the first to introduce mallet-style putters, which helped revolutionize putting. Odyssey makes traditional blade putters, mallet-style putters and hybrids, most with their patented "White Hot" technology, which makes the putters more responsive as there is more give in the clubface and putts come off the putters straight and true. The company offers a range of lengths in its putter shafts, including several belly-putter styles. Prices range from below £50 up to nearly £250.

A couple of date for your diary:
5th June 12-5pm a Wilson Fitting Day
27th June 12-4pm a Lynx Fitting Day
Both days are a great way to try the full range of equipment with a technician who knows the clubs inside out. I will also be on hand throughout the day to help but I would advise you to book an appointment by coming into the shop or click here to book a slot.

Finally this week is a photo of Team Titleist or should I say myself and Eamonn McGrath who was the winner of the PGA Pro Am qualifying competition last week and will be my partner representing the club in the regional qualifying competition at Dunham Forest next month.

Why it might be time for a spot of shoe shopping

Last week we talked about power transfer, something you will find uncomfortable if your shoes don't fit correctly. Research suggests a significant number of you aren't playing in the right size shoe which can only have a negative impact on your golf. Then there's the pain...

No more faffing! Choose the right trolley bag

Last week we took a look at some fantastic new lightweight carry bags on the market. For those 36-hole days, however, a trolley bag may be a better option. Be careful though, for trolley bags are like referees - you only notice the bad ones. Thankfully, we have some super options in our shop...
