MOT Your Clubs

In an aim to get you prepared for the fast-approaching season, we are offering a FREE Golf Pride grip for your 7-iron!!

Take a look at your grips, you may feel they are ok but if you compare them to a new grip you will be surprised at the difference. Even though they may not look worn, grips get harder and a bit shiny over time, the consequence is that you start gripping the club harder which leads to poor shots and higher scores.

Come in and look at the different grips available and get your season off to a good start.

Grip Size

In this week's newsletter, we are looking at the importance of having the correct size grip on your golf clubs and having grips that are in the right condition. We are first going to look at the size of the grip i.e. a midsize grip or a jumbo grip.

The main two faults from grip size are too thick and too thin. With having a grip that is too thick on the golf club will cause the hands not to release when at the impact area, causing shots to leak right. By contrast a grip that is too thin will cause the hands too over release through impact which can cause misses left, such as a hook.

The diagram to the right are the measurements you use to find the correct grip size. The first measurement is the length of the hand, wrist to longest finger and the second measurement is the length of the longest finger. After taking these measurements the correct grip size can be found that is suitable to your hand size.

Grip Condition

There is also the grip condition of your clubs, this is through overuse of the grips and neglect. Grips over time will start to ware down and lose the tackiness and start to slip. This can lead to the player gripping the club harder which can reduce the motion in the wrists and reduce power and therefore lose distance. Grips should be replaced every 40 rounds or every 30 rounds if you're spending a considerable amount of time at the practice range.

Regardless of rounds played, a grip should always be replaced at the first sign of noticeable wear, including:

  • Smooth, hard surfaces
  • Cracks
  • Shiny patches
  • Wear spots, especially where the thumbs make contact
  • Faded or bare spots on grips that have been painted or have logos
  • Complete loss of tack

If you are looking to check your grip size or the state of your grips don't hesitate to come into the shop and we can measure you up and check the grips. This gives you a head start with the start of the season fast approaching.

Competition news

Results

Unfortunately, we don't have any competition news this week, the gents didn't have a comp on Saturday and we don't have the lady's results from Tuesday yet.

AM AM Shotgun

This Saturday however the gents have an AM AM Shotgun, starting at 12.15pm, followed by the Gentlemen's Section meeting and the new Captain is voted in.

Peter Atherton will be the Captain for this year, providing nothing strange happens. Our new president, Richard Worsley, will also be taking over. We wish them both the best of luck over the coming year.

On Sunday Peter and Richard will be having their first competitive match as my partner/opponent for the year in our first Captain/Pro match where Peter and I will be taking on last year's captain, Ian Smith, and the new President. I Hope you are going to be on good form this year Peter!

Our Captain over the last year, Ian Smith, will also be doing his prize draw with the chance of winning a day of golf and an overnight stay at the wonderful Woodsome Hall Golf Club. Tickets are still available in the shop to be in with a chance of winning.

Epic Continued Success

There was more good news for Callaway on Tour last week as the popularity of the GBB Epic keeps on rising. In Malaysia for the Maybank Championship there were 12% more GBB Epic products in play compared to Dubai from the previous week, 71 in total split between 35 drivers and 36 fairways. Two players gaming GBB Epic in Malaysia included Danny Willett, who showed encouraging signs with a T5 finish, and Todd Sinnott, recent winner on the Asian Tour, who topped the driving distance chart for the week.

On the PGA Tour at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro AM, Callaway Staffer Kelly Kraft recorded his highest career finish ever with a solo second place. He's another player who quickly moved into an Epic Driver at the start of this year, and during the final round at Pebble he hit 12 of his first 13 fairways.

Finally, in the first LET event of 2017, the Oates Vic Open in Australia, Callaway Staffer Sandra Gal finished runner-up, having put in a superb final round in very tough conditions to force a play-off.
