Equipment Check

SUPERSTROKEIn this newsletter, we are going to look at the importance of looking at the size of your putter grip and the condition. Putter grips have come a long way since the standard sized grip, and now the sizes to choose from are endless with the most popular being the Super Stroke grips if you're looking for a thicker option.

There are a couple of benefits to using the thicker putter grip, one being that your hands are less active at address making a much smoother stroke, the reason for this is that the hands can't wrap around the grip so they are naturally relaxed. All of this means that the hands are less likely to manipulate the face.

Currently available in the shop we have a range of Super Stroke putter grips for you to have a look at that range from sizes 1.0 through to 3.0.

NEW
in 2017 we have the brand new weighted Super Stroke if you are looking for something a little different. This grip comes with a removable 50-gram weight so you can tailor the grip how you choose.

GOLF MPRIDEAnother option is again the brand NEW Golf Pride putter grips, which we have two styles, the contoured grip, and the straight grip. Each grip is designed to sit a little different in your hands to suit you grip and putting style. We have a couple of examples in the shop so you can demo them yourself and see what comes out on top.

However, if you don't feel that you suit a thicker grip but your current grip is a little worse for wear we still have several standard sized grips for you to try.

Pros news

Dustin Johnson Moves to World Number One

Jason Day's
reign as the number one golfer in the world ended this weekend after a 47-week stay at the top. Dustin Johnson now claims that title after an impressive weekend at the Genesis Open.

Dustin Johnson not only won the tournament this weekend, he did so in very impressive fashion. After entering the final round with a five shot lead, Johnson continued to dominate, stretching his lead to nine shots at one point. He ended his tournament with a final round 71, which allowed him to cruise to a five shot victory.

How many different World Number Ones have there been since Langer became the first official World Number One in 1986?

Competition news

AM AM Stableford

KENOn Saturday, the gents played in an Am Am Stableford competition, followed by the gentlemen's meeting, where the NEW Captain is voted in and officially starts his year of Captaincy at Prestbury Golf Club.

In the competition, William Brough, Steve Cheetham and Phillip Carr managed a great score of 80 points but this was only good enough for third place. Craig Barker, Graham Wagster and Tam Byrne, who also managed 80 but came just ahead of third on a card play-off.

Out in front though, with a great score of 82 points were Paul Wild, Ken Williamson and Ken Mairs. Well done guys on a great win. Pictured we have the winners Ken Williamson and Paul Wild here as Ken Mairs had to leave straight after the golf.

Peter Atherton is The NEW Captain for 2017

NEW CAPTAINIn the meeting, afterwards, Peter Atherton became our NEW Captain for a year as Ian Smith stepped down. We want to thank Ian for all the time and effort he has put in as Captain over the last year and let's hope that Peter can do just as good a job. As one of Peter's first responsibilities as Captain he played as my partner in the Captain/Pro challenge where we took on last year's Captain and the NEW President, Richard Worsley. We had a very enjoyable game which quite fittingly ended in an honourable draw.

Ladies 14 Hole Stableford

ladiesFinally, the ladies played in 14 hole Stableford on Tuesday where, despite the heavy wind and the rain later on, we had some good scores in. In third place in Division One with 28 points was Jill Morris, Jill was narrowly beaten on a card play-off by Monica Bewers, who came in second. The winner of Division One with a great score of 30 points was Helga Henry (pictured).

In Division Two, Wendy Mosley came in third with a score of 25, Gill Clewley came in second with 26, but out in front and the overall winner, with a fantastic 32 points, was Caroline Harrison-Croft.

Well done to all our winners in last week's competition.

Picture Competition

pic compWe are running a series of competitions at the moment with the winners winning a sleeve of balls and then all correct answer (if any) ultimately going into a prize draw where a big prize will be won.

This week we are doing a picture competition, this picture is taken somewhere on the golf course, but where is it?

Rules Quiz

You all need to read your rules book.

Last week I showed you a video. In the video you see me taking my club back to see if I have room to take my shot, whilst taking my club back for the third time I knocked off a pine cone. What is the ruling?

A. No Penalty.

B. One Shot Penalty.

C. Two Shot Penalty.

The answer is C and we didn't get a single right answer.

This is why...

Rule 13-2

A player must not improve or allow to be improved: "

  • The position or lie of his ball.
  • The area of his intended stance.
  • His line of play or a reasonable extension of that line beyond the hole, or
  • The area in which he is to drop or place a ball

Penalty for breach of rule:

Match play - Loss of hole; Stroke play - Two strokes.

The video I showed you last week fits into the second bullet point. I had improved the area of my intended swing by knocking off the pine cone. As the pine cone was the only thing in the way I am deemed to have improved my swing area and I get a two stroke penalty. If, for example, there was a bunch of leaves and I knocked off a few, but most the leaves are still there, I am deemed to have not improved my swing area so no penalty is given.

Tour news

Finally, Nearly Masters Time

The Masters and the season are fast approaching. We will be doing our usual Masters sweepstake so you can come and book your slots now. We will also be doing the fantasy team thing again. More to be explained closer to the time.

GolfSixes

Aiming for a younger demographic

The European Tour have introduced some innovative ideas for the season ahead. The World Super 6 combined 54 holes of stroke play with a final-day knockout, whilst GolfSixes, which takes place later in the year, sees two-man teams battle it out over six holes in a group stage, before progressing to a final-day knockout.
