Competition news

Club Competitions

On Saturday, we ran two competitions. One was the Easter Stableford, which was an individual event and the other was a Father and Son competition, which was a Greensome Stableford.

In the individual stableford we had some very good scores. In 3rd place with a very good 39 points was John Ogden, equalling Johns score but just beating him on a car play-off to come 2nd was Matt Delaney. But way out in front with a great score of 42 points was Jonathan Park.

Whilst the individual competition was going on, the Father and Son Greensome Stableford was in full swing. Ian Smith and Andrew Smith came in 3rd place with 32 points. Just ahead of them with 33 points were Russel and Matthew Gardener. But way out in front with a fantastic score of 38 points were the Captain, Peter, and Will Atherton.

On Easter Monday we had another family oriented event, the Easter Family Foursomes which was very closely contested at the top. Bill and Angie Riordan came in 3rd with 32 points. Just ahead of them in 2nd were Gary and Tracy Titchen who managed 33 points. But in the lead with 33 points was the Captain, with his 2nd win of the weekend and his lovely wife Andrea. Here they are pictured after their Easter victory.

The following day, on Tuesday, the ladies played in the Liz White Memorial, which was in the form of a Par competition split into 2 divisions. In Division 2 Margaret Woof came in 2nd with -3 and Denise Oakes won the comp with a score of 1. In Division 1 Deborah Baker came in 2nd with a score of 2 but just narrowly beaten by Helen Bolam who also score 2 but won on a card play-off and was also the overall winner on the day.

Well done to all our winners in last week's competitions!

Demo day

Lynx Demo Day

Last Thursday we had Andy, the rep from Lynx, on the practice ground letting some of our members have a go with the latest Lynx kit. It was a fun day for everyone, though it was a little bit cold. But we managed to get some of you down to have a go.

Ellen Cail even liked the driver she used so much that she has decided to get one herself! And that is what these days are all about, we look forward to the next time Andy comes down!

Ball Testing - Putting

You may remember a couple of weeks ago we showed you the difference between different balls when chipping a ball in around the same area. Joe used a few different balls and we worked out that the higher end balls reacted more to the green. This time we are going to look at putting. Here is a video of Joe using different balls to see the difference, if any, to how the balls rolls.

As you can see in the video Joe uses a mirror and tee pegs to make sure he hits the same putting stroke, so it is a controlled environment. The first ball he hits is the hardest one, and as you can see, it goes the furthest. He then hits softer and softer balls and as you can see the pattern is the ball doesn't go as far. The last one, which is the softest, does actually go quite far, but this is because it bobbled off the face a little, a factor which is hard to control.

We then went on to test the consistency of the balls. Joe does 4 shots with the same ball. The balls all finish around the same position, this is because of two things. Number 1, Joe is a very good putter. But because he used the same ball for each stroke so the balls roll was consistent. Therefore it doesn't actually matter what ball you use for consistency, just that you use the same ball all the time.

If you are having trouble finding consistency with your putting stroke why not try out a different style.

Here is Joe demonstrating 3 different putting strokes for you to try.

Pros news

Finally, On A Sad Note

Sad day in our house this week as we had to say goodbye to our class clown. Darci was a couple of months shy of her 10th birthday, but unfortunately had what the vet thought to be a brain tumour which caused her extreme pain on Sunday evening.

Darci was a wizard in the show ring if not in the field. She will be sorely missed by all of us. Run free over the rainbow bridge!
