Rule of the week

New Rule on Tour

The R&A and the USGA have issued a new decision on the Rules of Golf to limit the use of video evidence in the sport.

Players can now avoid a penalty if the violation could not be noticed with the naked eye, such as when a player unknowingly touches a few grains of sand in taking a backswing with a club in a bunker.

Rules officials also will eliminate penalties if they feel players made a reasonable judgment in taking a drop or replacing their golf ball on the putting green.

The announcement comes just weeks after Lexi Thompson was handed a four-shot penalty at the ANA Inspiration for a rule break from the previous day's play, which only became known when a television viewer spotted and reported the offence.

Very harsh. This will be a welcome rule to players on the tour.

Course Care

We are very lucky here at Prestbury to have such a great facility and therefore it is important to maintain its condition. Arguably the most important aspect of looking after the course is repairing pitch marks. If pitch marks are left alone or not repaired they can take a long time to heal completely.

Here is a video explaining how to correctly repair a pitch mark.

Competition results

Club Competitions

Last Wednesday we had a mid-week stableford competition and we had some fantastic scores with 3 people breaking the 40 point barrier. Phil Reynolds got a great score of 41 points but was only good enough for 3rd place. Elliot Kirton was 1 ahead with 42 points, but way out in front with an almost unbelievable score of 45 points was Terry Cross.

On Saturday the gents then played in a stableford competition split into two comps, one off the white tees and the other off the yellows. In the yellow comp, Barry Kallaway came in 3rd place with 33 points. A further shot ahead with 34 points was Eric Bolam. But out in front with a great score of 39 points was Anthony Bentley, maybe you can step up to the white comp next time Anthony! The comp off the white tees this week also had some great scores. Tam Byrne scored 39 for 3rd place, Mike Davies beat Tam on a card play-off to take 2nd place. But out in front and the overall winner with fantastic score of 42 was Glenn Marshall.

Tuesday came the turn of the ladies and they played in a stableford competition split into 2 divisions. In Division 2, Joan Crouch came in 2nd place with a score of 33 points and was narrowly beaten by Kirston Forbes who also managed 33 points but won on a card play-off. In Division 1, Nicky Markland came in 2nd with 35 points and Myra Penkethman won the competition and was the overall winner also with 35 points and winning on a card play-off.

Well done to all our winners in last week's competitions.

Try a Different Putting Stroke?

There is no 'correct' putting technique or grip. As long you can get the putter go back and forwards straight it doesn't matter how you hold it. If you are having trouble finding consistency with your putting stroke why not try out a different style.

Here is Joe demonstrating 3 different putting strokes for you to give a try.

You may even want to try a bigger grip to help you strike through the ball straight, a larger grip and prevent your wrists from turning over and helps for a straighter putting stroke.
