White Memorial
With the season now in full swing there are plenty of competition results to talk about. Starting with the men's first major competition of the year, the white memorial. Played in brilliant conditions with the course coming on very strong and the scores reflected this, with Ian Rennison continuing his brilliant form from the winter winning with a score of plus 5 just beating youngster Tom Hollingworth by 2 holes. A quick mention to Josh Garside who had shot a brilliant score of 1 under par to finish plus 2.
Bell Cup
On Sunday, we had the ladies in action playing the Bell Cup against Ashton and Makerfield. They advanced without any problems winning comfortably with a final score of 5-2, congratulations and good luck in the next round.
Mixed Greensomes
On bank holiday Monday, we had the mixed greensomes stableford competition, there were some brilliant scores with a considerable amount of people shooting well into the 30's, the winning score though came from Gill and Norman Buxton with a terrific score of 41 points just narrowly beating Patricia and Edward Hunt by just 1 point.
Instruction
With the current dry spell of weather we've been having the course has firmed up a considerable amount making it difficult to play certain shots. The ball will tend to run through the green compared to the much wetter conditions of the winter. It is important to take a little more care when playing shots around the greens as the ball will roll on after it lands on the greens.
One tip is to focus on the landing area when you are playing the shot, around this time the landing area will be considerably shorter with the firm greens. Practicing on the putting green before you go out to play your round will give you a good idea of how responsive the greens are to certain shots such as a lob shot and a chip and run which will help you adapt to the greens out on the course.
