Kaymer goes wire to wire!!!!
Last week saw, Martin Kaymer completely dominate the U.S. Open at Pinehurst. It may have come as a surprise to some people, but we forget he won the Players Championship just a few months ago, and is already a major champion after winning the USPGA in 2010. A great story appeared for both of the runners up, Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton. Rickie Fowler paid a touching tribute to Payne Steward on Thursday, sporting some rather fine plus fours! He played well most of the week managing 72, 67, 70, 70. Erik Compton has gone through a lot in life to get to where his is now, as at a young age he had a heart transplant and obviously came through. If that wasn't enough later in life he suffered again and has now had two heart transplants! He is a great inspiration to many.
Pinehurst made for a great U.S. Open, as always incredibly difficult to score well however, the fairways and tee shots were slightly less demanding than previous U.S. Opens. The greens were not surrounded by long rough, but bunkers and big run off areas. This was a challenge for the pros as all of the greens featured a "turtleback" design, meaning the ball will run off at all angles. Stenson put up another good European challenge, however was never even close to Kaymer. Matthew Fitzpatrick of the Hallamshire golf club in Sheffield put on an excellent display for the most part, starting with a -1 par 69, sadly followed by a 78, but finished with 2 good scores of 71 and 73, he is defiantly one to watch in the future! Next up The Open at Hoylake!!! As usual I will be running a sweepstake featuring the leading 50 players in the world playing in the tournament, so make sure you reserve a player before they all sell!!!
This week's results start with the ladies 18 hole medal #4 and the 36 hole medal. In the 18 hole there were 20 entries in division 1 and leading the way with a net 70 was Emma-Jayne Bolshaw with Jae Bowers and Monica Bewers tied 2nd with net 74's. In the 2nd division there were 41 entries with Gill Usher leading the way with a net 77 with Penny Smith and Jill Morris tied 2nd with net 79's. In the 36 hole competition there were only a dozen entries and in top spot with a net score of 159 was Helen Bolam.
The gents also played an 18 hole medal on Saturday with 55 entries and the course won as for the first time I can remember for the men the competition was reduction only for handicap!!!! Nick Hargreaves led the field with a net 73 with James Offer, Mr Captain and Alasdair Stewart tying in 2nd place with net 74's. The week end also saw a new look for the 36 hole Club Championship. For the first time category 1 and 2 handicap players played 18 holes on Saturday morning with the top 20 players playing the 2nd 18 holes on Sunday morning. The overall winner was Dan Young with a couple of gross 71's with Joe Armitt in 2nd place with 75 & 69 and Alex Elliott in 3rd place with 69 & 76. In the nett category Josh Turnock took 1st place with 132 with Ian Bartholomew 2nd with a net 140 and John Browning 3rd with a net 141.
