Captain's Day
The weather could not have been better for Captain's Day on Saturday, 30 degrees heat with unbroken sunshine meant for a great day.
In 3rd place on the day with a score of nett 70 was Michael Harington playing off +2. Michael also managed the best gross of the day with a fantastic 68. He is picture top right receiving his prize from the Captain.
In 2nd place was our regular helper Jeff Speake who also scored 70, good to see Jeff get amongst the prizes with all the work that he puts in for the club. He is picture middle right receiving his prize.
Out in front with a fantastic score of nett 68 was Simon Montgomerie. He is pictured below right claiming his first place prize from The Captain.
Well done Simon on a great score!
Well done to all the winners on Captain's Day!!!
US Open
Brooks Koepka continued the run of maiden major winners with an impressive four-stroke victory at the US Open. Koepka hit a stunning final round. The world No 22 birdied three of his final five holes to shoot a five-under 67 at Erin Hills to pull clear of overnight leader Brian Harman and the chasing pack.
Koepka finished the week on 16 under, equalling the lowest 72-hole total in the tournament's history set by Rory McIlroy in 2011, with Hideki Matsuyama firing a round-of-the-day 66 to grab a share of second spot. Koepka began the day a shot off the pace but moved up the leader board with a two-putt birdie at the first, before rolling in from four feet at the next to grab the outright advantage. He kicked on from there with his long and accurate driving and nobody else ever really looked like challenging him.
One of the highlights of the weekend was Justin Thomas's 3rd round where he hit an unbelievable 63 which was topped off with one of the shots of the year. On the 667-yard par-5 he hit his 2nd shot (around 300 yards) to within a couple of feet of the pin. Incredible scenes, he certainly has a great career ahead of him.
The Open
Now the US Open is behind us, our attention turns to The Open at Royal Birkdale. As usual we will be running our sweepstake in the shop. More Open build up to follow in next week's newsletter.
Epic Irons!!
Without a doubt, the most technologically advanced Callaway irons ever.
Next-generation 360 Face Cup - just 1mm thick at its thinnest point - is another key ingredient to unlocking extra yards throughout each set. Featuring an ultra-thin rim around the perimeter of the inner side of the face, at impact it flexes and rebounds to add ball speed on centre-hit shots, while minimising loss on off-centre strikes.
The Centre of Gravity (CG) position in each head is precisely and individually managed via a new Metal Injection Moulded (MIM) process that utilises a dense, and heavy, tungsten powder baked into intricate Internal Standing Wave shapes that are unique to each iron.
This ground-breaking, industry-first process allows the CG to be exactly positioned from club-to-club, (in the 3- to 8-iron 30% of the total head weight is located in the Internal Standing Wave alone) making long irons easy launching and high flying, and shorter clubs more controllable.
We've got some demos in the shop with various shafts, if you fancy having a go just pop in and borrow one! I had a go with them yesterday and they really do fly.
