On Saturday we had the Jubilee Vase in which a competitive field battled it out for one of our club trophies. A host of players came in level par at 71; Mike Davis, Bill Seddon, Alan McGuigan, Vino Dave and Adam Cockerill, who also had the best gross of 74, all shared 3rd prize. Then, 2 shots ahead of the pack, was Steve Best who came in 2nd place with a very good 69. A further 2 shots ahead, with a fantastic score of nett 67, was Will Atherton.
We also had a ladies exchange day last week with Heswall. We had 58 ladies travel down to the Wirral and play an am am at Heswall. This meant we had 15 teams, with 2 secret partners. In third place we had Lynne Dicken, Jill Moriss, Elsa Andrew and Rosemary Limb who scored a very respectable 86 points. In 2nd place, after a count back, we had Myra Penkenthman, Jenny Purves, Val McGuigan and Pam Johnson, also with 86 points. But in 1st place, with a terrific 93 points were Mary Staton, Kirsten Forbes, Nan Coates and Cath Halpin. Congratulations to all our winners last week!!
In other news world number one Rory McIlroy edged a gripping US PGA Championship in near darkness at Valhalla to become the first UK player to win back-to-back majors. Three players were still in contention at the final hole, with heavy rain having earlier led to a two-hour delay. A see-saw battle on the back nine witnessed four different players sharing the lead at some stage. But it was the Northern Irishman who dug deep to follow his Open success with a one-shot victory as he finished 16 under. However McIlroy would not have finished the day were it not for a fine display of sportsmanship from Mickelson and Fowler. The pair were in the group ahead and allowed him to play up behind them as he tried to beat the fading light following the rain delay, then waited on the side of the 18th green to applaud the new champion. McIlroy's resurgence on the back nine capped an enthralling final day and saw him become the third youngest player of the modern era - after Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus - to win four of golf's biggest prizes.
