The biggest news for us last week is that Jamie Donaldson has booked his place in the European team for this year's Ryder Cup after winning the Czech Masters by two shots. The Prestbury member held off the challenge of his compatriot Bradley Dredge to claim the £128,000 prize money and qualify via the European list. At the start of the week Jamie needed £24,000 from the Prague tournament and next week's Italian Open to ensure he tees off at Gleneagles without fighting a host of other names for qualification from the world points list. He was in a strong position to do that anyway and occupied the eighth of nine automatic spots, but his victory in the Czech Republic means he no longer has to worry about anybody putting pressure on him for a spot in the team. Now it is almost time for Paul McGinley to name his wildcards, who would you have in? At the moment Graeme McDowell is occupying the 9th spot but if he were to be over taken we are assuming that McGinley would have him as one of his 3 picks. A long shot for a wildcard spot is Bernhard Langer. Some reckon he would be a great pick. A lot of this European team are fairly new to the Ryder Cup, so his experience of 10 previous Ryder Cup entries could prove invaluable. He is also in great form coming into the main event, but may be overlooked by McGinley, with the talent of Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Stephen Gallacher and Luke Donald all fighting to make the team.
Last Tuesday 19th of August we had a Ladies Quad Stableford Shotgun, in which the best 2 scores of the 4 counted. 18 teams competed in this competition with one team at a slight disadvantage with only having 3 players. Val McGuigan, Rosemary Limb, Jenny Moore and Margaret Wood were our runners up with a great score of 82 point. Then a further 4 strokes ahead, in first place, with an excellent score of 86 points were Emma Jane Bolshaw, Andrea Atherton, Gill Usher and Marie Hadfield.
On Saturday we had the AM-AM in which we had 34 teams compete. In joint third place we had David Barker, George Senior and Nick Hargreaves shared 3rd with Steve Best, Mike Davis and James Marner, who both scored 28 points. Just 1 shot ahead of these two teams, with 79 points, was Doug McNair, Anthony Bentley and Phil Reynolds. This means our winners on Saturday with a magnificent 81 points were Matt Bowden, Sam Lowe and Peter Lowe. Congratulations to all our winners last week!!
