On Saturday the men played the Presidents Day Major competition, with a competitive field of 146 players. It was fair to say that the course was playing as difficult as ever with fast greens, tricky pin positions and bouncy fairways. This told in the scoring as no player shot under par and the course standard scratch went up to 75 for the first time this year. We had 4 players tied for second place with nett 73 which included Dan Osbaldeston who took best gross with a 72 gross of a handicap of plus 1. Other players on 73 included Dominic Franey, Gareth Lover and Peter Lowe. The winner this year though with a nett score of 72 was Steve Burnage, Steve hung on well over the tough last stretch of holes to seal the win by just a shot to be 2018 champion. A little mention for junior Finn Manning who shot a gross 78 nett 72, fantastic score and well done!
Next was the ladies Maud Bason Medal and the ladies 9-Hole Stableford. Starting with the ladies 9-hole competition, again tough scoring conditions on the course with similar bouncy fairways and tricky greens but still great scores. In third place with 15 points was Shirley Osbaldeston, next in second was Wendy Phelan who just edged Shirley with 16 points, but the winner was Carolyn Lee with a total of 19 points.
Moving onto the 18-hole competition, in a tie for third place was Myra Penkethman and Valerie McGuigan with a nett score of 75, next in another tie for second place was Helen Bolam and Nicky Markland with a nett score of 74. The winner this year was Carol Ryder, she scored a gross 78 nett 72 to take the victory.
Congratulations to all the winners over the past week. Special mention to the Men’s Scratch Team, they won the league on Monday night after securing a win against Wilmslow. Other matches elsewhere went Prestbury’s way which allowed us to secure the win with a game in hand. Congratulations to all the players that played for the scratch team this year.
