Last Tuesday 26th August we had the Mr Captain's prize. This was a ladies stableford competition in which 60 of our lady members competed for the captain's prize. The group of ladies that finished in 2nd place; Marie Hadfield, Cecelia Lyon and Gill Mellor all finished on 38 points. Marie just beat the other 2 on a card count back. 2 shots ahead of the pack with a great score of 40 points and the winner of Mr Captain's Prize was Myra Penkethman, so well done to Myra for last week.
On Saturday 30th of August we had a Medal competition, in this we had 3 people come joint 3rd place; Austin McBride, Matthew Gardener and David Murray all managed to make a very good score of nett 69. 1 ahead of this group with a nett 68 was Steve Savage who put in a great round to take the runner up prize. Then a further 3 shots ahead with a magnificent score of 65 with the lowest gross of 73 was Steve Parton. Well done to all of our winners in the last week's competitions.
As I'm sure you are all aware the final Ryder Cup places have been completed and the teams are set and ready to go. Paul McGinley, made calling Luke Donald with the bad news his top priority as he completed his team with three wild cards comprising of Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Stephen Gallacher. He undertook what he called the toughest call of his career.
Donald has struggled to find form this season and Stephen Gallacher put in a great performance last week in the Italian Open when the pressure was on him to make the team. Gallacher needed to come 2nd in the Italian to get an automatic spot but came 3rd missing an automatic place by 1 shot. This however showed his ability to play well when the spot light is on and earned him a place in McGinleys captain's picks.
Lee Westwood is making 8th Ryder Cup appearance, an incredible achievement. His experience of being there and having the highs and lows the Ryder Cup can offer up, could prove very useful in this team with a few rookies involved.
The USA captain, Tom Watson, opted for a blend of experience and form in choosing Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan and Webb Simpson as his wild-card picks for this month's Ryder Cup. All of Watson's picks are former Ryder Cup players which he sees as important going up against a very strong European side. The bookies have Europe down as favourites but after seeing the USA's captain's picks McGinley thinks it will be very tough to beat the Americans and retain the iconic Ryder Cup trophy.
