Welcome to another exciting edition of our weekly newsletter, I hope you've had a great week on and off the course. Enjoy the read! |
On the Course... The first competition of the week was the Ladies Medal Number One and a Nine Hole Stableford, both played on Tuesday. We had a brilliant turnout for both competitions on the day with five ladies playing the Nine Hole Competition and 38 playing the Medal. Starting with the Nine Hole Competition, in a tie for first place were Jenny Moore and Linda Garrity both tied on 12 points, the winner on a better back six score was Jenny Moore to take the win. In the Medal we had more great scores with Darlene Masters in third place with nett 75, Gill Singh took second spot scoring a nett 73, but the winner with a great nett score of 69 was Lynne Cameron. The next competition was the Saturday Medal with two divisions on the day, conditions and scoring was tough with pin positions out for the Worthington and Top Dog Knockouts. In Division Two we had a smattering of players in third place on nett 75 including Andy Holt, Graeme Pallant, and Rob Irving. In second place was Tom Johnstone with a nett 72, but the winner with a nett 69 was David Rowley. In Division One we had a three-way tie between Dave Aitchison, Dave Murray, and Dave Greensmith with a nett 71, the winner after a back nine countback was Dave Greensmith.
We also had the Worthington and Top Dog Knockouts being played over the weekend with eight players lining up in each tournament vying for the win. In the Worthington we had the Final between Matt Delany and Dan Osbaldeston, with both players playing well throughout the round with the lead changing throughout the match, Dan Osbaldeston eventually took the trophy with a 3&2 win. In the Top Dog the Final was between Oliver Wilson and Donald Campbell, again another close match with this one going to the last hole with Donald Campbell coming out on top for the win. Congratulations to all the winners over the past week.

Europe win the Ryder Cup! Francesco Molinari secured the winning point as Europe regained the Ryder Cup on a thrilling final day at Le Golf National. The Italian completed a perfect haul of five points with a 4&2 victory over Phil Mickleson as Europe reached the 14.5 point mark. The United States won three of the top five singles matches on Sunday to close the gap on Europe to just one point, but Europe's experienced players down the order all took a firm grip of their matches, and rookies Thorbjørn Olesen and Jon Rahm claimed the notable scalps of Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods. Europe’s 10 - 6 lead meant they came into day three needing just four-and-a-half points from the 12 singles clashes for a ninth Ryder Cup win in the last 12 encounters, but it was Jim Furyk’s men who struck first on a thrilling final day, putting the first point on the board when rookie Justin Thomas beat Rory McIlroy by one hole in the top match in three-and-a-half hours. McIlroy led for large spells of the match, but things fell apart for him at the last as he sent his third shot into the water after getting into bunker trouble. After Englishman Paul Casey took half a point from his match against three-time Major Champion Brooks Koepka to put Europe 10.5 - 7.5 up, Webb Simpson completed a 3&2 win against Justin Rose to reduce America's deficit to two points. Tony Finau then ended his fellow rookie Tommy Fleetwood's 100 per cent record with a thumping 6&4 win in match five to make it 10.5-9.5.
However, the tide quickly turned blue once more as Olesen completed a resounding 5&4 victory over Spieth to record his first Ryder Cup point, and Rahm followed suit when a birdie on the 17th gave him a 2&1 win over Woods. Ian Poulter birdied the last to secure a two up win over World Number One Dustin Johnson, and with Henrik Stenson, Molinari and Sergio Garcia all dormie in their matches, victory was assured. Mickelson then found water off the 16th tee, and with Open Champion Molinari in close the pair shook hands. Stenson duly completed a 5&4 victory over Bubba Watson, Garcia became Europe's all-time leading point scorer with a 2&1 triumph over Rickie Fowler and, although Patrick Reed secured a 3&2 win over Tyrrell Hatton, Alex Noren won his match with Bryson DeChambeau to ensure the final scoreline finished 17.5-11.5.
A truly memorable Ryder Cup, one which won’t be forgotten for a long time.
