Last week our ladies took part in 2 competitions. The first of these was Medal Number 6 which took place on Tuesday 2nd September. In this competition 54 of our lady members took part. In division 2 our runner up was Jill Morris who managed a nett 75 which was just bettered by Shirley Osbaldeston who shot a nett 74 to win division 2. With the same score as Shirley was our runner up of division 1 was Gill Mellor. But, way ahead of the pack and winner of division 1 and our overall winner with a fantastic score of 67 was Isobel Wardle.
On Friday 5th September in the same week we had the ladies Pierpoint Trophy in which 36 ladies took part. Lynne Dicken was our runner up in this event with a nett 72 whilst Erica Wilkinson managed a great score of nett 69 to win the ladies Pierpoint Trophy.
Then on Saturday 6th, came the turn of the men to take part in the Pierpoint. We had a host of good scores in this comp. John Browning and Nick Baglin both managed a nett 69, with Nick coming just ahead after a count-back. We had another 2 players breaking the 70 barrier, with Adam Cockerill and Stephen Cheetham both making nett 68, Stephen was just ahead for the same reason. But with the best score and also the best gross was Richard Lowrey who made a 69 gross, nett 67, a magnificent score. Well done to all our winners in last weeks competitions!
As I'm sure you are all aware the final Ryder Cup places have been completed and the teams are set and ready to go. Paul McGinley, made calling Luke Donald with the bad news his top priority as he completed his team with three wild cards comprising of Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Stephen Gallacher. He undertook what he called the toughest call of his career.
Donald has struggled to find form this season and Stephen Gallacher put in a great performance last week in the Italian Open when the pressure was on him to make the team. Gallacher needed to come 2nd in the Italian to get an automatic spot but came 3rd missing an automatic place by 1 shot. This however showed his ability to play well when the spot light is on and earned him a place in McGinleys captain's picks.
Lee Westwood is making 8th Ryder Cup appearance, an incredible achievement. His experience of being there and having the highs and lows the Ryder Cup can offer up, could prove very useful in this team with a few rookies involved.
The USA captain, Tom Watson, opted for a blend of experience and form in choosing Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan and Webb Simpson as his wild-card picks for this month's Ryder Cup. All of Watson's picks are former Ryder Cup players which he sees as important going up against a very strong European side. The bookies have Europe down as favourites but after seeing the USA's captain's picks McGinley thinks it will be very tough to beat the Americans and retain the iconic Ryder Cup trophy.
