Greetings from Nick Summerfield
Prestbury Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Last Tuesday 16th September we had a ladies stableford competition. 44 ladies took part in the 18-hole competition whilst 12 opted to compete in the 9-hole. In division 2 we had a host of players making 36 points. Runners up Janet Taylorson and Helga Henry were narrowly beaten on a card count back by division 2 winner Christine Smith, all scoring 36 points. Division 1 runner up was Monica Bewers who managed to make a decent 35 points but was narrowly beaten by our division 1 winner Nicky Markland who also managed to make 36 points. In the 9-hole comp Gloria Halliley was the runner-up making 18 points, also on course to make 36, whilst our winner with a great score of 20 points was Margaret Hogg.

The following Saturday 20th of September came the turn on the men. The men competed in a medal competition in a battle to win the Rawshawn Trophy. Our very own shop assistant Nick Howsley (Snack) was amongst the leaders making a great score of 69, just beaten by George Senior who made 68 and also managed the best gross of 72. However George was just beaten by Gordan Reilly who also managed a great score of 68 but won the Rawshawn Trophy after a card count-back. Congratulations to all our winners in last week's competitions.

Following discussion over the last couple of years with our club architect, Martin Hawtree, it was decided that an area on the course that could be improved was the 1st tee. The reason there are going to be some changes to the white tee is the tee is very small in comparison to modern standards. Therefore the white tee will be enlarged and this also gives the opportunity to align it with the yellow/red tee and the fairway. The yellow and red tees have been the same for the past 40 years. As the area has been untouched, natural processes have caused the tee to become uneven in places and have made parts of the tee unusable. There will be some removals of vegetation around the tee also. The hedge, silver birches and the decaying oak will all be removed to improve the view from our opening hole to make it a more impressive start to the course. The front of the yellow and red tee will be removed, this is to achieve a clearer view of the hole and the soil will then be evenly distributed. A new rubber crumb path will also be added and a new notice board to freshen up things a little bit. Work will start on the 6th October and will last 2-3 weeks depending on weather. For more information see the notice board in the club house.

New Captains

This week saw the announcement of our new captain and presidents elect. Our new Captain Elect is Mr Graham Keys, our new President Elect is Mr Anthony Bentley and our new Lady Captain Elect is Jayne Harrison. Congratulations to you 3 on your new positions in the club.

In the shop this week we've got some lovely new jackets and fleeces merchandised by our very own Jill Morris. We've also got some beautiful ladies Nike autumn clothing to help you look like the real deal when taking to the course. We also have some new Green Lamb clothing of similar style plus some new layering garments as it's about the start getting cold! For the men we've got in some top of the range Nike waterproofs. The new Nike 'built to move' hyper adapt storm-fit jackets are designed to protect you from harsh weather but not impede your swing what so ever. For a limited time only we are giving these out on a try before you buy basis, and trust us when we say you will want to buy!!

The Ryder Cup is upon us! Sir Alex Ferguson spent an hour addressing the team at their Gleneagles base on Monday night at the request of European captain Paul McGinley. McGinley was keen to tap in to Ferguson's experience in motivating his United teams to 13 Premier League titles, and big United fan Rory McIlroy was among the keenest listeners. World No 1 Rory McIlroy says the United States team would be ill-advised to focus on targeting him and Ian Poulter at the Ryder Cup. McIlroy has established himself as the best player in the world this year, thanks to his two major wins at the Open and the PGA Championship. Meanwhile Poulter's extraordinary Ryder Cup record of eight points from 11 matches, including his unforgettable match-winning contribution at Medinah in 2012, has made him a talisman of Europe captain Paul McGinley's side. Jim Furyk expects the thick rough at Gleneagles to cause plenty of problems during the Ryder Cup. Furyk was generally positive about the state of the course after his first practice round on Tuesday morning, but hinted that finding the fairways off the tee could prove vital. Only time will tell how the course plays out.
