Last Tuesday 21st October the ladies took part in a Quad AM Shotgun event. This was a 14 hole come and included lunch for everyone. The runners-up for the comp were Myra Penkethman, Kate Coakley, Margaret Simons and Linda Miller who managed a very good score on the day of 62 points. Angela Riordan, Elaine Fawkes, Gill Buxton and Shirley Osbaldeston also managed 62 points but took 1st prize as they won on a card count back.
The following Saturday 25th October we had a Stableford 5-Club Challenge. Peter Mantle came in with a decent score of 38 points which was only good enough for 3rd place. In 2nd place, just one shot ahead, David Massey scored 39 points. But a further 3 shots ahead with a great score of 42 points was Anthony Wright. Very well done to Anthony for getting that many points with only 5 clubs in the bag, very impressive.
Finally on Sunday 26th we had a mixed stableford 14-hole comp, with the best 3 scores on each hole counting. The runners-up in this competition were the Captain, Kay Harris, Mike Smith and Glenys Smith who managed a very good 88 points. But this winners were Mike Forbes, Alex Forbes, John Woof and Margaret Woof who did very well to get a score of 91 points. Well done to all our winners in last week's competitions.
Movember!
Next month I will be rolling back the years and re-growing my moustache for the 'Help The Heroes' Charity. I shall not shave my moustache for the 30 days of November so hopefully I should have a pretty decent one by the end of it all. If you would be kind enough to donate to the cause then please visit www.bmycharity.com/nicksummerfield to make donations.
Winter skills challenges
Do you want to be a better golfer?? Over the course of the winter we are going to do drill weeks to help you improve, we are going to give you an extra short stroke game each week to help you improve your scores. These will be either chips, pitches, putts or bunker shots. We will try and vary it every week so you can improve your all round game.
Night Golf
On Friday 5th December we are having our night golf event. This is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. We wait until after dark and have a small competition when it is dark outside. Lights will be place either side of the fairway and around the greens so you can see where you are going, and glow in the dark balls will be provided to make them easier to spot. This will be a very fun event and offers something a bit different. Food and drink will be available at the bar afterwards. If you fancy it make sure you register as soon as possible as there are limited spaces and it will get filled up.
Calorie Count and Fuelling the Body
This week in the shop we are going to focus on keeping fuelled whilst playing golf, comparing the amount of calories burned whilst playing golf to see what your fuel intake should be when playing a round. A 60 year old woman weighing 11.5 stone playing a full round of golf would burn an estimated 1,796 calories. A woman of the same age weighing 11 stone would burn 1,341. A 50 year old man weighing 15 stone would burn off an estimated 2,357 calories and a 30 year old man weighing 13 stone would burn off an estimated 2,032. As you can see we burn a lot of calories when playing a full round so it is important to keep your energy and water levels up. We sell golf bars in the shop which contain 415 calories and the smaller bars which contain 276 calories and 'oh my goodness' bars which contain 183 calories. These are very good for fuelling your round. It is also important to stay hydrated as we can perspire a lot whilst playing golf. Hydration losses excess of 5% of body weight can decrease the performance by about 30% which is a big loss when playing sport. So to maximise your performance on the golf course make sure you stay fuelled and hydrated.
