Midweek Stableford
The first competition was the Midweek Stableford which was played on Wednesday with a field of 45 gents playing over the course of the day. It was quite a finish with three players finishing on a great score of 40 points, which were Joshua Turnock, Andrew Frost and Mark Hughes. After going through the back nine we had Andrew Frost as the winner as he came back in a terrific 22 points to take the victory, with Mark Hughes in second place and Josh Turnock in third. Congratulations Andy!

Founder’s Vase
Next was the Founder’s Vase competition that was played on Saturday, which saw a great field of 137 players taking part throughout the day and trying to get their hands on the trophy. Starting off with third place and there was a smattering of players tied which included the likes of Russell Gardener, Phil Reynolds and Stuart Robinson, who all shot a very good nett 69. But the winner had to be decided once again by a card playoff and that was between Elliot Kirton and Oliver Procter who both finished with a nett 67. The winner this week coming back with a brilliant back nine of 32 was Oliver Procter, congratulations Olly!

Mixed Foursomes
On Sunday we had a mixed competition which was a foursomes format over 18 holes. We had 29 pairs on the day with some great scoring in what is always a tough scoring format. In third place with 37 points was Carol Ryder and Peter Atherton, they were just pipped on a card playoff to second place by Gillian and Phil Singh. The winners were Patricia and Edward Hunt who scored 38 points to take the win. Congratulations Edward, and Patricia!

In the Maud Bason Foursomes it was Alex Forbes and Christine Shuttleworth who took the prize after shooting a nett 73 in what has always been a tough format. Congratulations ladies!

Key Holes at Portrush
As I said last week we have picked out a few holes that we think will be key holes going through the week of The Open. My next two holes that I think will play a key part in the Championship are the 16th and 17th holes.
Starting with the 16th, this par-3 is known as Calamity Corner which underlines just what might unfold. On paper, the distance shouldn’t hold that much fear, but it is the design of the hole that makes it one of the toughest around. It is all rough between the tee box and the green and wind will be a constant threat. There are no bunkers to contend with, but the rough is the defence of par.
Next is the 17th, there is no respite after the 16th with the penultimate hole another key one. Driver off the tee can reach the green via the downhill slope, but a fairway pot bunker, two greenside traps and the natural undulations of the land leave that far from certain. Conservative play still leaves a tricky approach on this hole, known as Purgatory, where a routine par could be enough for the leading pack.

My Open Picks
Here are a few of my picks for The Open to keep an eye out for over the next week that I think have great chances of being in with a shout. Unfortunately, some of my picks may have peaked too early as Jon Rahm and Bernd Weisberger have won both the Scottish and Irish Open in the run-up to this year's Open. I’ve also gone with Matt Wallace as he is always around the top 20 when playing in any event, so another good week is likely to be on the cards as he is trying to peak for the Majors. My outsider pick is going to be Marc Leishman, he has been away from the winning circle for a while now, but he has been showing signs of form and could be a great choice at a big price.

15th Hole
On the back of the Chairman’s newsletter regarding the 15th hole we would like to reiterate the necessity of coming into the shop or the office to report a ball that has potentially gone over Chelford Road, due to issues we are having with one of our neighbours.
Please be aware by advising us of a problem, you are insured by the golf club for any damage that may occur. However, if these instances aren’t reported the cost of the club’s insurance will increase significantly, which could affect members subscriptions in the future.
Course management tip
As you can see from this picture from the white tee, it does look like a very intimidating tee shot. As the hole is only 349 yards and stroke index 12, most of you will get a shot. So my advice is, to use a 4 or 5 iron off the tee and use the slope to take the ball down the fairway. By doing this you are avoiding taking the tee shot too close to the tree’s and also running out of fairway on the right-hand side.

Golf clothing has come a long way from the old-style knickerbockers worn in the early 1900s - you can hardly imagine popping to the supermarket in a pair of those today. Fortunately, these days, golf brands make clothing that is high performing on the course but looks good enough to set the trend off it too. |
Take this polo from FootJoy. The attention is certainly in the detail with the foulard print trim on the button placket offering a classy addition to an already smart-looking polo. Even technology comes to the fore as the top's moisture-wicking properties make sure that, when it comes to the course, you are primed for performance. This polo is a worthy addition to any golfing wardrobe, so come in and take a closer look at FJ's range next time you're down the club. |
