Fairytales do come true... There is only one place to start this week and that of course is in Ireland where The Open returned after an absence of 68 years and what a success the Irish and The R&A made of the oldest Major. I thought the golf course was set-up very fair, the weather played it’s part and the crowds were brilliant. Obviously the Irish expected an Irish winner and got one, but not the one they expected. I must admit it was strange to see such a good player as McIlroy succumb to the weight of expectation and play so poorly in round one. It just goes to show it can happen to the best of us! However you can’t take anything away from Shane Lowry and how he handled himself over the weekend, but it would have been nice to see Tommy Fleetwood hole his putt on the fist green on Sunday afternoon to have put a bit of pressure on. Also for me it was great to see him partying into the night with friends (no doubt a few pints of Guinness were downed) Benefiting too from Lowry’s Open success was another Irishman with Charlie Cunningham winning the Open Sweepstake and getting £175 on his shop account, and just to finish off my picks for the week finished 11th, 32nd, 51st and missed cut so not a bad week pundit-wise.
