My 30th Professional's Evening

I am pleased to say that my 30th Professional’s Evening last Friday went very well and I have received a great deal of positive feedback from those who attended.

The evening consisted of a number of short videos of Joe and myself giving course management advice or rules advice as we played 18 holes of PGC. There was also a rules quiz which this year I did during the main presentation which I thought worked better and made the evening more interactive. The winners of the quiz were Ian Smith, Penny Smith, Cecilia Lyon and Geoff Lyon. Margaret Simons won a Garmin X40 GPS Watch as the clubhouse prize.

The main draw for credit to be used in the shop was drawn by the Lady Captain and the winners were:

Bel secures invite to 2020 Augusta National

Bel Wardle has received an invitation to play in the 2020 Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship.

The 54-hole, stroke-play tournament will feature an international field of 72 players. Invitees are determined by awarding winners of other recognized championships and using the Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking. Bel said that she is very excited to have the opportunity to play in this event.

Rounds 1 and 2 will be held on 1 - 2 April at Champions Retreat Golf Club with the final round held on 4th April at Augusta National Golf Club

Goodbye Lewis

Unfortunately, this week Lewis Wilkinson, who was 89 years old and a member of the club for 41 years, died on Sunday 19 January.

Our thoughts go out to his family and details of his funeral will be advised once known.

 
Club news

Centenary celebrations: flag raising

Our first event will be the Raising of the Centenary flag scheduled for Sunday, 23 February at 11:30am. We are aiming to meet on the 1st tee to watch our Captains’ drive-offs, followed by the raising of the flag.


We will then go back to the clubhouse for a free celebratory drink at which Stephen Napper (Chairman of the Centenary Committee) will give a brief resume of the plans organised by that Committee followed by our Captains’ welcome addresses and a selection of canapés to be served shortly after. It will hopefully be a great way to catch up for all and to start our Centenary celebrations in style.

From 2:30pm onwards there will be a Sunday lunch service in the dining room and ladies' lounge for any that wish to stay.

There will be a notice that goes up on the board this week for all that are wanting to attend. If you could please add your name to this so that we can help Richard with the catering numbers.

In addition, a list will also go up for anyone wanting to stay for Sunday lunch.

Competition news

Gents Am-Am

This Saturday saw another Winter Order of Merit for the gents and it was an Am-Am with teams of 3. The morning brought some difficult playing conditions with an overnight frost making scoring difficult.

Shop news

Mavrik has landed

This week saw the launch of the new Callaway Mavrik range of clubs and I am pleased to say that we have our demo kit up and running!

The new technology in the heads means that more ball speed and forgiveness are possible for all handicaps.

More good news is that I have a Callaway fitting day with technician Tom on Saturday, 1 February from 10am - 2pm.

Tom will have the whole new range plus the Jaws wedges which were launched late last year.

I will be available to help but I urge anyone who is very interested to book an appointment with Tom who will be happy to discuss the numbers on his Flightscope!

I have one appointment left for 11.30am but as I have stated I will be on hand to help out if you want to come up and try the new range, so hurry!

Time to get excited

Whilst it's easy to think that the golf industry goes into hibernation during the winter months, it's actually one of the most exciting times of the year for us!

This week sees the PGA Show take place in Orlando, which is a huge four day conference where golf brands large and small showcase their new product for the year ahead.

Layer up

Last week we talked about one of our favourite topics: rain! Whilst waterproof protection is key for staying dry when caught in a downpour, combining layers of clothing underneath is vital if you want to enjoy the warmth without being so restricted that you can’t complete your backswing.

What do we mean by layering?

Lots of golfers are still in the habit of putting on as many layers as they possibly can in the winter to combat the cold – a vest, turtleneck, polo, sweater and jacket – but today’s golf clothing could easily cut that down by half.
