Tip of the week

Keeping Warm and Dry

Layering

As we are getting towards the coldest part of the year it is very relevant to talk about keeping warm on the golf course. It is important to where layers but at the same time you don't want to obstruct your swing. Three layers are generally considered to be the optimum amount and these consist of a base layer, a mid-layer for either warm or cold conditions and an outer layer.

Layer 1: The "Base Layer"

Base Layer garments are worn next to the skin and moisture management is a key element for this primary layer to remove moisture from the skin which natural fibres such as cotton, cannot achieve on their own due to high absorbency. The base layer should fit the shape of the body quite closely so that it works to its optimum in cold conditions.

One of the key advantages of a base layer is the warmth it generates to the body helps golfers swing more freely and therefore perform better. If you haven't got any base layer garments we have some in the shop including this FootJoy 'perf' base layer at a reasonable price of £35.

Layer 2: The "Mid Layer"

The mid layer plays a key role in thermal regulation depending on the conditions.

In cold weather the mid layer should give additional thermal insulation to keep the body warm and comfortable by trapping heat generated by the body. Mid-layers for cold conditions are generally constructed from soft and stretchy materials that provide a snug fit that in no way restricts the golf swing.

Breathability is essential in a good mid layer so that any excess moisture or heat is transported away from the body for easy evaporation. In warmer conditions the mid layer may be worn next to the skin rather than over a base layer. They are designed to be light, soft and comfortable when swinging the club.

We have a number of mid-layer garments here in the shop including this lovely lined sweater which is available at only £65

We've got loads more sweaters like this one as well as a good selection of shirts which can also be used as a mid-layer.

Layer 3: The "Outer Layer"

The Outer Layer is the weather protective layer and is designed to provide golfers with maximum protection against rain and wind. Outer Layers can be waterproof, rainproof or windproof. It is essential that the outer layer you choose is adequate for the conditions you face but should also be of a breathable moisture wicking construction and well ventilated to allow the 3 layer system to work efficiently.

New in the shop we have the new ProQuip Tour Pro Elite 360 Jacket. These jackets are about as good as they get and sold at a reasonable price of £59.99 - £69.99, depending on the model.

Waterproof Challenge

Keeping dry at this time of year is very important as if you get wet, you get cold, your muscles seize up and it makes swinging freely very difficult. Not to mention it is also very unpleasant to be cold and wet.

Waterproofs lose their ability to hold off water (waterproofness) over time, so it is important to replace them every now and again. If you have had the same waterproof jacket scrunched up in your bag for a couple years now, the likelihood is that it isn't going to do much good when you get badly rained on. It is also important for a waterproof to be able to stretch and twist when you swing.

New technology in the latest waterproofs we have in the shop all allow for maximal movement, to keep your swing from being obstructed and therefore swing at your normal speed. We invite you to challenge your swing speed with your waterproof jacket compared to one of ours.

Woolly Hats and Mitts

Heat is lost mostly in the areas where there is a high volume of blood flow, and that blood passes very close to the skin. The main areas in the body where this occurs are the groin, the armpits, the head and fingers and toes.

Obviously the first two you don't need to worry too much about if you've layered up sufficiently. But as for the head, hands and feet they can often be ignored or forgotten about. It is very easy to leave your hat and gloves in the car, or think you don't need them when actually they are one of the most important garments to where to keep warm on the golf course.

We have some great hats and gloves available in the shop, with some new hats in with the PGC logo on from £10-£20.
