Club Competitions
Last Tuesday the ladies played in a Par competition. We had 29 entries split into 2 divisions. In Division 1, Jane Campaigne came in 3rd place with a score of -4. Jane was narrowly beaten by Nicky Markland who scored the same but just came ahead on a card play-off. These too however were bettered by Monica Bewers who managed a score of -3 to win Division 1. In Division 2 we had some even better scores, Jenny Purves and Janet Taylorson both scored -1 to come 2nd and 3rd respectively. But winning division 1 and the overall winner with a great score of 0 was Margaret Simons.
Then Saturday was the turn of the gents. They played in a 4BBB Stableford Competition that qualified for the order of merit. In 3rd place were David Aitchison and Alastair Kennedy who scored 39 points, giving them 9 points towards the order of merit. Just ahead with the same score were John Ogden and David Wood, giving them 12 points. But the winners of the comp were Peter Lowe and Conrad O'Neil with 40 points giving them 16 points for the week. Peter and Conrad came 2nd in the last order of merit comp meaning they have stormed ahead with a total of 28 points. Remember it is the best 4 results from the 10 winter competitions that count, so there is still plenty of hope for the rest of you yet!
Current top 5 scores:
T1. Peter Lowe 28
T1. Conrad O'Neil 28
T3. Alastair Kennedy 18
T3. David Aitchison 18
T3. John Ogden 18
Re-Configuring 18th Bunkers
You might be aware that we are having work done on the bunkers on the 18th. We are re-configuring them so technically they should be easier to get out of (we'll see).
Here is a picture of Mark and friends working hard on the bunker to the right of the 18th green.
Rory's Double
Rory McIlroy won Dubai's DP World Tour Championship on Sunday, overhauling overnight leader Andy Sullivan with four birdies on the back nine to also be crowned Europe's top money earner for a third year in four. McIlroy carded a final round 66 to end with a 21-under aggregate score of 267, having begun the day on 15 under, a shot adrift of England's Sullivan at the $8 million European Tour's season finale. Playing partner Sullivan's 68 left him on 268, one stroke short despite stretching his advantage early on as McIlroy seized control mid-round with seven birdies in 11 holes. The four-time major winner could even afford to take a drop on the 17th after finding the water, eventually recovering to make a 40-foot bogey, which he described as the best bogey of his career, before sealing victory with a 12-inch par putt on the final green. McIlroy's 12th tour title means the 26-year-old also retained the Race to Dubai, formerly known as the Order of Merit and given to Europe's top money earner. He was also victorious in 2012 and 2014.

Keeping Warm and Dry
Layering
As we are getting towards the coldest part of the year it is very relevant to talk about keeping warm on the golf course. It is important to where layers but at the same time you don't want to obstruct your swing. Three layers are generally considered to be the optimum amount and these consist of a base layer, a mid-layer for either warm or cold conditions and an outer layer.
Layer 1: The "Base Layer"
Base Layer garments are worn next to the skin and moisture management is a key element for this primary layer to remove moisture from the skin which natural fibres such as cotton, cannot achieve on their own due to high absorbency. The base layer should fit the shape of the body quite closely so that it works to its optimum in cold conditions.
One of the key advantages of a base layer is the warmth it generates to the body helps golfers swing more freely and therefore perform better. If you haven't got any base layer garments we have some in the shop including this FootJoy 'perf' base layer at a reasonable price of £35.
Layer 2: The "Mid Layer"
The mid layer plays a key role in thermal regulation depending on the conditions.
In cold weather the mid layer should give additional thermal insulation to keep the body warm and comfortable by trapping heat generated by the body. Mid-layers for cold conditions are generally constructed from soft and stretchy materials that provide a snug fit that in no way restricts the golf swing.
Breathability is essential in a good mid layer so that any excess moisture or heat is transported away from the body for easy evaporation. In warmer conditions the mid layer may be worn next to the skin rather than over a base layer. They are designed to be light, soft and comfortable when swinging the club.
We have a number of mid-layer garments here in the shop including this lovely lined sweater which is available at only £65 .
We've got loads more sweaters like this one as well as a good selection of shirts which can also be used as a mid-layer.
Layer 3: The "Outer Layer"
The Outer Layer is the weather protective layer and is designed to provide golfers with maximum protection against rain and wind. Outer Layers can be waterproof, rainproof or windproof. It is essential that the outer layer you choose is adequate for the conditions you face but should also be of a breathable moisture wicking construction and well ventilated to allow the 3 layer system to work efficiently.
New in the shop we have the new ProQuip Tour Pro Elite 360 Jacket. These jackets are about as good as they get and sold at a reasonable price of £59.99 - £69.99 , depending on the model.
