Taking place at the idyllic TPC River Highlands course just south of Hartford, Connecticut, the Travelers Championship was thrilling to the very end. Keegan Bradley triumphed over Tommy Fleetwood by a single stroke as the latter came undone on the final hole.

Fleetwood had a three-stroke lead over Bradley come the end of the Saturday, but started his final round with an unwelcome 3 bogeys within his first 4 opening holes. At the end of the round as the pair stepped onto the 18th tee for the fourth time, Fleetwood’s lead over the American had dwindled to just one stroke.

While both players found the fairway on their drives, Tommy’s approach shot came short of the green while Keegan stuck his pitch shot right on the flag. Fleetwood then proceeded to agonizingly three-putt to make a bogey while Bradley secured a birdie.

Tommy’s loss after having the lead all tournament was painful to watch but the crowd was ecstatic as local favourite Keegan Bradley drained his 6-foot putt to secure himself the victory. Bradley is currently in fine form and this win will no doubt be a confidence boost for him and a positive signal to his fellow countrymen as he prepares to captain the U.S. Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black this September.

Bradley is even considering not only captaining his team but potentially playing in the event too “This definitely opens the door to play. I don’t know if I’m going to do it or not but I certainly have to take a pretty hard look at what’s best for the team.”

The last Ryder Cup playing Captain was Arnold Palmer when he and his team defeated Great Britain at East Lake Golf Club back in 1963.

Tommy Fleetwood is currently also in second place behind Rory McIlroy in terms of qualifying points for the European side. His efforts this weekend certainly demonstrate he’s as hungry as ever to win golf tournaments.

Fleetwood has had 41 top-10 PGA Tour finishes and has finished in 2nd place at 6 of those events. He has however racked up 7 wins on the DP World Tour. He was understandably frustrated with how this weekend ended for him but he seems keen to regain his composure and focus on the future:

“I’m upset now, I’m angry. When it calms down, look at the things that I did well, look at the things that I can learn from. So I did plenty of things well enough this week to win, I didn’t do that; it hurts…I obviously played great, I put myself in a great position, I was leading the tournament for 71 holes. I just want to make sure that I can put myself in this position as soon as possible again and try and correct what I did this time.”
